Micah Richards: We are not too big to go down

Skipper Micah Richards has warned it would be 'naive' to think Villa can't get relegated this season.

The claret and blues sit bottom of the Premier League with just four points from their opening 10 games and though Richards believes there is enough quality in the squad to get out of trouble, he admits the severity of their situation should not be ignored.

"We have got to stay positive," he said. "With this team I don't believe we should be in this position.

"I can't ever say we won't get relegated because that would be naive. If you look at our points tally at the moment it says we are going down.

"We have to be realistic. Should we be there with our players? No. But we are and we have to do everything in our power to get out of that.

"If people think Villa can never get relegated they need to think again. I'm sure Newcastle thought that a few years ago. They are a massive club and had to do it the hard way."

Richards missed Wednesday's Capital One Cup defeat at Southampton through injury, but could face a ban after being charged with improper conduct, following an incident in the tunnel at the end of last Saturday's defeat to Swansea.

The defender had until last night to lodge an appeal.
