The club confirmed the 30-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of the month, has been offered fresh terms to remain at Villa Park.
It is understood Vlaar, a £3million signing back in 2012, has asked for more time to make up his mind. The Dutch international is understood to have a number of suitors on the continent.
Vlaar has made 88 appearances in three years at Villa but has regularly been blighted by injury and lost the club captaincy to Fabian Delph during his most recent absence.
