Switzerland warned by Aston Villa new-boy Philippe Senderos

Philippe Senderos today warned Switzerland to forget about France – or risk facing an early World Cup exit.

The Villa new-boy reckons his country cannot afford to be playing catch up if they lose against Ecuador on Sunday, with the 1998 champions in their second group game.

"Our first game very important," he said. "We know we are going to be up for it against France, but Ecuador is going to be a tough test and hopefully we can set ourselves up to go through."

Brazil is Senderos' third World Cup after previously playing in South Africa and Germany and he was in the side which shocked eventual champions Spain 1-0 in the group stages four years ago.

And the former Arsenal defender, who joined Villa on a free last week, has 53 caps for his country and believes his experience will be vital in South America.

The centre-back said: "I'm looking forward to this one more because I've come to an age where I feel good physically and I've learned a lot from the last couple of World Cups, so hopefully I can bring my qualities to the team.

"These are really exciting times for me. It is my third World Cup and the third consecutive World Cup for Switzerland.

"Being such a small country it is a great achievement for us and hopefully we can do better than last time."
