Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar on Holland revenge mission
Ron Vlaar today targeted revenge over Spain as he started the Netherlands' World Cup countdown.
The Villa skipper is out to avenge the Oranje's 1-0 defeat in the 2010 final when the teams meet on Friday.
Vlaar was left out of the squad for the last World Cup having just recovered from almost two years of injuries.
But the 29-year-old insisted the country wants closure following their extra-time defeat in South Africa four years ago.
"It was a big chance for Holland to win the World Cup and we were really close. We lost," said Vlaar. "It should always burn inside to make something right.
"Of course there are some players who played then and now, but there are also a lot of different players.
"To play against them now in the first game is a great challenge. We have to be at our best that's one thing for sure – they have a lot of qualities.
"We also have very good players. We have to be strong as a team, work hard together and then we can achieve."
Vlaar is Holland's most experienced defender with 24 caps and will also face Australia and Chile. They will rely on Robin Van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben for success.
"We work hard to get better as a team and we also know we have our best players up front," he said.
"But if you look at all the games we played during qualification and friendlies we didn't concede many goals.
"So we have to give confidence to our forwards to accelerate and make a difference for us."
