The claret and blue legend insisted the lack of players going to the World Cup highlights the need for new blood.

Brad Guzan and Ron Vlaar are the only two Villa players heading to Brazil after Vlaar's selection for the final Netherlands squad was rubber stamped on Saturday.

Villa have struggled in the Premier League and boss Paul Lambert has admitted he needs to buy experience to avoid another battle against relegation.

And Taylor agrees, insisting the inexperienced players are desperate for help after two seasons of struggle.

The former midfielder said: "I think you have to have that blend. I wouldn't say our team is full of young lads, many are coming up to their mid-20s. The fact is they have not had a lot of Premier League experience. The games they have played, it's not many. They need more Premier League games.

"In World Cup year we used to have most of our team go away and now we have two, in the whole squad and they are not English either. It's worrying but hopefully it can be addressed in the coming months."

Vlaar had been named in the Netherlands' final 23-man World Cup squad before playing 90 minutes in the Oranje's 1-0 win over Ghana.

Guzan also helped the USA to a 2-1 win over Turkey as a second-half substitute, replacing Everton's Tim Howard in goal.
