Ron Vlaar eyes cup joy with Aston Villa
Ron Vlaar today challenged Villa to win a cup and end their 18-year wait for a major trophy.
The claret and blues captain wants a Wembley win to revive the struggling club.
Under Paul Lambert Villa reached the League Cup semi-final last year – only to be humiliated by Bradford, then in League Two.
This year they were knocked out of the FA Cup by League One Sheffield United .
Villa won the League Cup in 1996 but were losing finalists in 2010 and reached the FA Cup final in 2000 – but Vlaar believes the wait has been too long.
He said: "It would be good to have another good cup run. It was frustrating that we didn't get to Wembley the previous season when we lost to Bradford in the Capital One Cup semi-final.
"But hopefully we can do something next season. To win a trophy is a huge thing, for the players, the club and the fans."
Villa are up for sale and beat the drop by just five points. But Vlaar believes they can shake their strugglers tag, saying:
"Now it's about looking to establish ourselves as a mid-table team next season."
