Paul Lambert was today set for talks with Randy Lerner as speculation mounted over his Villa future.

The boss, and chief executive Paul Faulkner, will meet Lerner in the USA this week after the chairman put the club on the market. The trio will discuss Villa's short-term plans with the club in limbo should Lerner not complete a quick sale. He is not expected to continue to bankroll Lambert with serious transfer funds in the summer should a sale drag on.

No buyers are in place and the club have no timeframe on selling, with Lerner looking for a £200m return on the £62.6m he paid out to purchase the club 2006.

It is in stark constant to Lambert's calls over the last month to spend big.

The Scot, who has a year left on his contract, wants to stay but it now looks inevitable he will leave Villa Park.

Villa have also shelved their end of season awards night at 24 hours notice.

The dinner was due to take place tonight but, after Lerner's announcement and the poor finish to the season, the club have opted to cancel.
