Raging Ron Vlaar today insisted he is "burning" inside as he admitted Villa are hurting following their Stoke shambles.

The skipper promised big improvements after the claret and blues' 4-1 hammering on Sunday – their biggest Premier League defeat of the season.

It denied them a chance to all-but seal safety as the Potters leapfrogged them and dropped Villa down to 11th. And Vlaar, 29, wants to put the result right when Villa go to Manchester United on Saturday.

He said: "It's burning inside of me now. It wasn't good enough and I'm also frustrated about my own game. It has to be better and I wanted to show I could play. I look forward to the next match and want to play well again for myself and also for the team. We can get a result at Old Trafford, of course."

Sunday was also in front of the lowest league crowd of the campaign – 30,292 – as fans watched the hosts slip to their 11th loss at Villa Park this term. Vlaar admitted Villa must learn from their mistakes if they want to chase a top 10 finish.

"There are still inconsistencies as we are still learning." he said.
