Paul Lambert hails his Aston Villa side for Cardiff draw

Boss Paul Lambert today hailed Villa's "huge point" as they prepare to jet out to Europe.

The claret and blues claimed a point in last night's 0-0 draw at Cardiff and will now head to Portugal for a training camp.

The draw kept Villa four points above the Premier League relegation zone and Lambert insisted it could be a key result.

He said: "We've picked up 17 points away from home which in this league it's an incredible stat to do that. It's another point and it could be a huge one for us.

"With so many games still to play there will be a lot of back and forth with a lot of teams.

"The thing with us is we're a threat. We can score. We've got lads who can score and you saw that against Cardiff.

"We had chances to win the game and we should have won it. But you keep going, you keep looking to try and win the next game. Listen, you don't know.

"We were in a hell of a position last year we were well down there and we've managed to get out of it, so you keep going, you don't judge anything until it's finished."

Villa do not play for another 11 days – until they go to Newcastle – and sit 11th in the Premier League.

They will now go to Portugal and Lambert insisted it will be beneficial to his team.

He said: "They'll train every day. They're going over there to work really. It's just a normal week.

"The important thing is we haven't a game on Saturday.

"We've decided to give them a break. They deserve it for all the work they've put in. We'll go and work hard.

"I've done it before with teams and it's good. Most teams who are knocked out of the competition will probably look to go away and we're not any different."
