Paul Lambert: Villa could have axed me
Boss Paul Lambert today admitted he would have been sacked had the Villa board bowed to pressure.
Chief executive Paul Faulkner backed Lambert this week and insisted the club are still making progress despite a string of poor performances.
Lambert survived a nightmare winter last season – including losing 8-0 to Chelsea and suffering League Cup embarrassment to Bradford – but retained the faith of Villa's board. Villa have already been knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield United this month and the manager is relieved he has the support of Faulkner and chairman Randy Lerner.
"If they were knee-jerk they would have thrown me out long ago. All you can do is maintain your way," said Lambert.
"The majority of home fans watch you to win. But there are only so many away fans who can go. I'd love to give the home fans something, especially with the noise they can generate.
"No, the flak has not got to me. I used to walk the streets of Glasgow!"
