The items, including England caps, shirts, medals and programmes, are set to go on display at the Old Trafford museum after Edwards' former club bought them from members of his family for an undisclosed fee.

However, a small number of Dudley-born Edwards' football shirts and caps will remain in the town on display at the new Archives centre, following an agreement between the club and Dudley Council.

The collection had been exhibited at the now closed Museum and Art Gallery since June 2008.

Edwards is regarded as the greatest player to have come out of the Black Country. He was part of the infamous Busby Babes’ side, making 177 appearances for Manchester United before he was tragically killed in the Munich air disaster of 1958, aged 21.
