Liam Etheridge and Dale Doody ensured there will be a West Midlands presence in the Clubs for Young People national championship semi-finals – without boxing.

Wednesbury ABC's Doody, a light flyweight, had already been told he had 'walked over' – no opponent to box – another round in Class C, for amateurs born in 1992 or 1993.

But Liam Etheridge, from Pleck ABC in Walsall, had actually arrived at the Monty Hind Youth Club in Nottingham on Saturday afternoon before discovering his opponent had failed to make the weight.

Joe Fitzpatrick, from the Holy Trinity ABC in Belfast, had come in 1kg over the 52kg bantamweight limit so Etheridge progressed without boxing in Class B, fighters born in 1994.

However, the 'walk over' rule cost Walsall Wood ABC's Mason Holmes the chance to progress, as he was pulled from the quarter-final with the flu.

The two West Midlands fighters that did compete on the day suffered points losses.

Wolverhampton ABC's Carnell Brown was well beaten by John Grotty while another fighter from Stevenage ABC, Jack Burnidge, took a split decision against Wodensborough ABC's Josh Stokes.

Stokes make Burnidge work for the win in a close call, with a point in it on all three judges' scorecards.
