Boss Chris Hughton today defended Jean Beausejour after the Birmingham star was kicked out of the Chile squad.

The winger was booted out ahead of their World Cup qualifiers Uruguay and Paraguay last week after breaking a curfew.

Reports suggested Beausejour – along with Albion's Gonzalo Jara Reyes, on loan at Brighton, Arturo Vidal, Jorge Valdivia and Carlos Carmona – was drunk after being given the afternoon off from training.

Coach Claudio Borghi immediately axed them but Hughton has leapt to the defence of his Blues star.

He said: "Jean's a top professional here and he's also a top professional in Chile. He's someone who has played since he was 17 years of age and has never been involved in anything apart from what is professionally right.

"I've spoken to Jean since his return and I am completely happy with the explanation he gave to me. It's very much hurt his pride."
