A spirited second-half fight back earned Birmingham their first win in the Europa League group stages with a 2-1 victory over Slovenian side Maribor.

The home side took the lead 29 minutes in, after a calamitous mistake by goalkeeper Colin Doyle allowed Dalibor Volas the easiest of tap-ins.

But Chris Burke equalised against the run of play 19 minutes after the break and Wade Elliott completed the comeback 11 minutes from time, squeezing his 25 yard shot under Maribor goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic.

The results, coupled with Bruges 2-1 win over favourites Braga, throws Group H wide open after two games.

Blues boss Chris Hughton made five changes for the visit to the the Ljudski Vrt stadium, with Doyle replacing Boaz Myhill for just his second start of the season.

In defence, Pablo Ibanez replaced Stephen Carr while Morgaro Gomis, Wade Elliott and Keith Fahey were chosen as part of a five man midfield replacing Nathan Redmond, Curtis Davies and Chris Wood from Saturday's 1-1 draw with Barnsley.

Up front, Marlon King was chosen as a lone striker, with giant Serbian forward Nikola Zigic making the bench for his third straight game.

The home side settled better in the first half and Brazilian forward Marcos Tavares missed a decent chance to open the scoring early on.

Doyle showed good reflexes to push away a goal-bound Cvijanovic header shortly afterwards but Maribor opened the scoring in farcical fashion with 29 minutes gone, from the Irishman's goalkeeping howler.

The Blues custodian completely miskicked Jonathan Spector's poorly hit back pass, allowing Volas to tap into the unguarded net.

To add to the visitors' woes, Liam Ridgewell then went into the book two minutes before the break for an unsporting foul on Tavares.

But after an indifferent start to the second half, Burke levelled the game 64 minutes in with a well-placed finish from King's superb, defence-splitting pass.

It proved to be the former Coventry striker's final contribution of the game as he was immediately replaced by Zigic from the re-start, as Hughton made his first change of the game.

Elliott missed a good chance to put Blues in front with 18 minutes remaining, when Jasmin Handanovic repelled his shot.

But the former Burnley winger made no mistake seven minutes later, when his low effort from all of 25 yards squirmed under the Maribor goalkeeper and into the net.

Maribor boss Darko Milani? made two changes in the final 20 minutes in a bid to claw a result back, with Goran Cvijanovic replacing Agim Ibraimi and Robert Beric replaving Ales Mertelj.

But Blues held on to record an important win and revive their hopes of qualifying for the next round, after their 3-1 home defeat against Braga two weeks earlier.
