Birmingham's Premier League home game with Newcastle has been called off because of the weather.

The match at St Andrew's, due to kick 3pm today, has fell foul of the severe snow that has ripped the weekend's fixture list to shreds.

The surface is fit to play on, after the club had undersoil heating put in last year, but Blues have decided to postpone the fixture as they cannot guarantee the safety of supporters making the journey to the game.

A club statement said: "Ground staff have been working around the clock to ensure the pitch was playable and supporter sections of the stadium were being attended to by the club's maintenance team.

"But, unfortunately, all that good work has been undone by incessant snowfall and referee Mike Jones, along with the local authorities, have asked for the game to be called off.

"Roads leading to the stadium have fast become unsafe, so the decision to postpone has been made on health and safety grounds."
