Aden Flint signs, David Okagbue leaves - Why both moves are 'good business' for Walsall?

Walsall can be satisfied with the business they completed on Monday evening.

Not only did they sell David Okagbue for a six-figure fee to Peterborough United, but they were able to replace him with the ultra-experienced Aden Flint.

Flint has joined the Saddlers on a one-year deal after leaving Mansfield Town at the end of last season.

Flint's experience key for Walsall's defence

The back-line needed a serious injection of experience and Flint's arrival brings up the average age of the central defensive options from 22.6 to 24.8.

His leadership skills and influence will be key to guiding the likes of Courtney Clarke, Harrison Burke and Mason Hancock through the rigours of their first seasons in the Football League.

Evan Weir and Rico Browne can also benefit from his knowhow, as they look to stake a claim under Mat Sadler during the forthcoming season.

Not only that but internal competition will be crucial and bringing in a player of Flint's calibre can only be a good thing in that respect.

36 'not out'

Flint might be in the twilight stages of his career at the age of 36, but the evidence of his two years at Mansfield suggests he still has plenty left to give.

The 6ft 6in giant played all 46 games during the Stags' promotion-winning campaign in 2023-24 and featured 36 times in League One last term, albeit with 22 of those coming off the bench.

With over 500 professional appearances to his name, Flint will enter a strong leadership group at Walsall comprising Albert Adomah, one year his senior, and 35-year-old Jamille Matt.

Sadler has previously spoke of his desire to boast experience in each position of the pitch and Flint's capture adds another piece to that jigsaw.

Sam Hornby will be the main custodian of the goalkeeping department and seasoned professional Brandon Comley can offer similar qualities in midfield.

Matt, Adomah and even Josh Gordon will provide the experience in attack with over 1,500 club appearances shared between them.

Okagbue sale 'suits all parties'

The decision to sell Okagbue also appears a shrewd move for all parties.

The Irishman has penned a four-year deal with Peterborough, which includes an option year, and Walsall have received a 'substantial six-figure sum' - according to Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

Okagbue, who first arrived on loan from Stoke City in 2023, played 89 times and scored three goals during his two seasons at Bescot.

He has made great strides for a defender of just 21 years of age, but Okagbue was equally prone to the odd mistake and it feels a prime time to cash in.

On that point, Okagbue had just 12 months left on the two-year deal which he penned when he joined Walsall permanently from the Potters during the previous summer.

For the player himself, Peterborough offer a step-up the footballing pyramid and are a club renowned for developing and nurturing young talent.

That's not to say he will be a success, but the philosophy of his new club will provide him with the perfect platform to progress.
