Matt Maher: Wolves' belated resurgence a fun distraction from brutal reality

Watching Wolves right now feels like a curious period of bliss in the middle of a dreadful nightmare.

A season which has for the most part been horrible will still end with the worst possible outcome.

But for the moment, while the club prepares itself for relegation and the tricky rebuild to follow, the worst campaign in recent history has suddenly become rather fun.

Or at least, the football has. Where previously what happened on the pitch was only a reminder of Wolves' failings, now it is helping you forget them, if only for 90 minutes or so.

Monday’s 2-2 draw at Brentford was among the more entertaining Premier League matches of 2026, featuring an impressive fightback which extended Wolves’ unbeaten run to three games.

Anyone who has watched those matches without knowledge of the table or what came before might struggle to fathom how Rob Edwards’ team are doomed to the drop.

The season, however, is played over nine months, not one. Enjoyable as much of Monday night was, it also served as a microcosm of a campaign for which an improved second half could never fully make up for the failings of the first.
