'Too many top players' - Key man explains why Aston Villa will get back on track
Ross Barkley believes Villa have too many “top players” for their slump to continue.
Villa have lost three straight Premier League matches for the first time in more than three years and only the second time in Unai Emery’s reign.
But they remain fourth in the Premier League and Barkley, who scored in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester United, is confident they can turn things around and realise their ambition of qualifying for the Champions League.
The midfielder said: “The result wasn’t what we planned for, Man Utd are a top team in top form, but, we’re more or less in the same position right now.
“We’ve just got to keep going, learn from it and keep working.
“We’ve got too many top players in that changing room for this form to continue.”
Barkley, who made his first Premier League start of the season at Old Trafford, reckons Emery’s men need to get back to doing the basics right.
Villa paid the price at United for sloppiness in possession and Barkley says it will require “better decisions on the pitch” if they are to correct their form.
“We are working on that on the training pitch and we’re analysing the games, the bad results and we’re trying to learn from it,” he said.
“We’ve got our captain (John McGinn) back, he’ll be pivotal in helping us get our form back and we’ll have some other players coming back from long injuries.
“But we’re staying positive.
“It’s disappointing, the results of late, but we’ve got too many top players, like I say, for this to carry on.
“We’re just going to learn from it, hopefully we can put things right and start kicking on again.”
