West Brom's last sporting director: From the Premier League to working in Nigeria

West Brom are said to be close to appointing a new sporting director.

Albion have reportedly identified Dominic Price as a top candidate to become the club's sporting director - with the former Liverpool man having recently left Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

No announcement has been made but Albion are expected to fill the position shortly.

It comes as Andrew Nestor, who had been serving as sporting director and president, departed the club recently.

Nestor had arrived at Albion having worked with owner Shilen Patel in the past - and filled a sporting director gap that had been vacant for some time.

The last time Albion had a sporting director in place, who wasn't part of the ownership set up, was back when Luke Dowling served in the role.

He departed following Albion's relegation from the Premier League in 2021. But where is he now?

Dowling had worked as sporting director at both Watford and Nottingham Forest, before arriving at Albion in September 2018.

He played a part behind the scenes in helping Albion return to the Premier League. However, he departed following relegation having wanted to bring in Chris Wilder as the new manager, a move that was overruled by the owners.

Since then he has had various roles, reportedly on a consultancy basis with Watford and there was talk of a potential move to Sheffield Wednesday.

But back in November last year, he made a surprise move and rocked up at a side in the top tier of Nigerian football.

He was appointed as a strategic partner at Sporting Lagos, one of Nigeria's professional football clubs.

When he was appointed, Dowling said: "It comes down to the ambition of the project. Shola Akinlade, the owner, reached out and laid out his vision, and frankly, it was compelling.

"He’s not just looking to run a football club; he wants to change the landscape of how a club operates in Nigeria. When you meet someone with that level of drive and a clear plan to reach those heights, it’s easy to get on board."
