Sam Eggington targeting another glorious chapter after landing major title shot
Stourbridge boxing star Sam Eggington is bidding to become a two-weight European champion after landing a shot at the EBU super welterweight title.
The 32-year-old will face France’s Milan Prat as he looks to add another glorious chapter to his impressive career.
Eggington is a former British and European champion at welterweight, who has also held the IBO world title at super welter during his 45-fight career in the pro ranks.
The former Warley amateur previously challenged for the EBU super welterweight title in 2024, losing a majority decision on points to Abass Baraou in Telford.
And he will now get a second shot after being installed as the mandatory challenger for Prat’s crown.
The EBU has given the fighters and their management until March 3 to reach agreement on terms, before the fight is put out to purse bids.
Prat, 26, has won 29 of his 30 professional bouts, including 23 of those by knockout. The only blemish on his record a stoppage defeat to Germany’s Slawa Spomer when challenging for the WBO global belt in 2023, one of only four of his fights to have taken place outside France.
Prat won the EBU belt with a ninth-round stoppage of Jan Helin in Clichy last November.
Eggington has not boxed since claiming the 36th victory of his pro career with a technical decision over Lee Cutler in Birmingham last August, earning the WBC international silver belt in the process.
A scheduled eight-rounder on the latest show staged by Cannock’s Excelsior Sporting Club earlier this month was postponed when news of the EBU title shot emerged.
In November, Eggington was honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the World Boxing Council but has long insisted he is far from finished.
“People have been telling me I’m finished since I was 25,” he said last year. “I just have to keep proving people wrong. My bubble hasn’t burst yet.”
