Aston Villa man apologises for costly FA Cup red card
Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot has apologised for his red card in Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Newcastle.
The Dutch shot-stopper was dismissed after bringing down Magpies forward Jacob Murphy near the halfway line moments before half-time.
Villa were leading the fourth round tie 1-0 at that stage but a man down collapsed to a 3-1 defeat in the second half.
Bizot took to social media to apologise for the impact his actions had on the team.
He wrote: “I needed a few days to rest and reflect.
“I want to apologise for my red card and the impact it had on the team and the fans. I understand that my action put the team in a difficult position.
“Need to keep going and keep working hard.”
Bizot was making his 11th start since joining Villa from Brest last summer.
The 34-year-old was signed to provide cover and competition for the club’s No.1, Emi Martinez, with Saturday’s mistake the first real setback of what has been an otherwise impressive start to life in the Premier League.
Bizot will now be suspended for the club’s next three Premier League matches, starting with Saturday’s visit of Leeds. Under-21 keeper James Wright will provide cover for Martinez in those games.
