Pitch inspection planned ahead of crunch Walsall fixture
Walsall’s crunch League Two fixture at Grimsby Town on Wednesday has been placed in doubt with a late pitch inspection planned.
The sodden Blundell Park surface turned into a mudbath during the Mariners’ 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Wolves on Sunday.
And it has been confirmed there will be an inspection of the surface at 2.30pm on Wednesday afternoon following days of persistent rainfall in Lincolnshire.
Grimsby say the surface is currently playable and that inspection is only taking place as a “precaution”.
A club statement read: “A further update will be issued as soon as the inspection has been completed.
“We have experienced consistent rainfall over the past six days, adding to an already unprecedented amount of rain in recent weeks.
“Our ground staff deserve tremendous credit for their tireless efforts, which ensured both the recent League fixture against Accrington and Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup tie went ahead as scheduled.
“We will keep supporters informed of any further developments at the earliest opportunity.”
Walsall head into the fixture aiming to halt a five-match winless run which has seen them fall to ninth in the table and increased the pressure on boss Mat Sadler.
