Round-up: Gornal see FA Vase dream die as Stafford lose 10-goal thriller
Devastated boss Stuart How claimed Gornal Athletic “failed to turn up” after their FA Vase dream ended at Hallen.
The Peacocks went down 3-0 in Bristol to exit at the last-16, against opponents How believes were the weakest they had faced in the competition.
But he placed the blame for the performance squarely at the door of his own team.
He said: “I am absolutely devastated. As are all the players in there. We have lost to probably the poorest side we have played in the competition and lost heavily.
“We just have not turned up, it is as simple as that.”
Gornal dominated possession in the first half but were stung on the stroke of half-time when Cory Thomas Barker fired Hallen in front.
Harrison Fairman then netted twice in the final 15 minutes for the home side, after the visitors had again failed to make the most of their chances.
“I thought we started the game well and were on top for the first half-hour,” said How.
“But we did not score during that period and they caught us on the break for the opening goal.
“In the second half we started quite well but we have not shown enough quality on the ball.
“The second goal was an awful one to concede and from there it was a mountain to climb.
“We have not been good enough. It’s as simple as that.”
Stafford Town remain outside the play-off positions in the North West Counties League First Division South, after losing a 10-goal thriller at home to Stockport Georgians.
Callum Parker fired Stafford into a sixth-minute lead and though Oliver MacFadyen’s double had the visitors in front at the break, the home side hit back to level three times in a pulsating second half.
MacFadyen eventually nudged Stockport ahead for good when he netted his fourth of the day in the 86th minute, before Kyle Wych finally put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time.
Five different players were on target as Brocton blew away Studley to stay firmly in the Midland Premier League play-off picture.
Dylan Millington, Connor Haddaway, Jake Thomas, Ben Haddaway and Morgan Payne were all on the mark in Warwickshire as surging Brocton made it nine wins from 10 matches to move within three points of the top-five.
The visiting team were 3-0 up inside 20 minutes against their struggling hosts and refused to loosen their grip, adding a further two goals in the opening seven minutes of the second half.
Assistant boss Jake Triggs said: “Scoring those goals early on was a help. We wanted to make sure that we didn’t sit back and kept on pushing.
“We did that today which was very pleasing. We also had players back and it’s important for the run-in. We have some big games coming up and to have the depth in the squad is a real bonus.”
Dudley Town ensured they remained above Brocton in an increasingly congested top half, thanks to a 3-1 win at Stone Old Alleynians.
Goals from Joey Buckley and Kyle Moseley had the Robins two up at the break before Jason Ukatu pulled one back for the home side to set up a nervy finish.
With the home side pushing for a leveller, Ryan Snape put the result beyond doubt when he scored 10 minutes into stoppage time.
Dudley are now up to sixth in the table, only outside the play-off places on goals scored.
