Along with Lindelof the keeper was Villa’s best signing of last summer but his colossal blunder here turned the tide of the match.

LAMARE BOGARDE
Did a decent job against Newcastle’s wingers but should have done better with a defensive header for the second goal, then lost the ball for the third.

VICTOR LINDELOF
Probably Villa’s best player on the pitch and one of the few who seemed to be showing any leadership. Another strong performance.
Dogged: 7
PAU TORRES
Some key interceptions as Villa aimed to soak up the pressure in the second half. Ultimately the task proved beyond them.
