Jones has his sights set on Monmore Green record
Proud trainer Chris Jones has a Monmore Green record well in his sights with the ‘super consistent’ Winterfield Kell.
The five-year-old bitch recently became just the fifth greyhound ever to reach 200 races at the long-standing Wolverhampton circuit, with the current record of runs held by Blastoff Josifa (trained by Craig Marston and owned by the Mo Cara Racing Syndicate) on 203.
This past Tuesday saw Winterfield Kell run her 201st race and make it back-to-back victories with an all-the-way success at A8 – following on from an impressive triumph at A9 on January 20.
Jones is hoping to break the record within a matter of weeks with his evergreen wide runner as he said: “She’s five now, but as you could see with her last race that she won well on Tuesday, she’s as keen as ever.
“She’s going for the track record and all being well, she’ll get there soon.
“Touch wood, she’s never been injured throughout her career and been a super consistent bitch for us.
“We don’t have any immediate plans to retire her as she’s still fully fit and willing to win races.
“She’ll be up to A7 for her next race and will find it tough to win again, but she’s never let us down and will give it her best.
“She’s never been at the highest grade, but she’s always been competitive and consistently won races. As a trainer, you can’t ask for more than that. You’d love a load of bitches like her.”
Meanwhile, there is top-drawer Open racing at Monmore tonight ahead of the Ladbrokes Winter Derby and Golden Jacket beginning next weekend.
Trial stakes over the 480m and 684m distances for the Winter Derby and Golden Jacket respectively are taking place, with one race in particular on tonight’s card being star-studded.
Race seven sees last year’s Monmore Puppy Derby and Gold Cup champion Headford Dane run from trap two, but he will not have easy over the four-bend trip.
Noellie (Paul Young, Romford) won the Coral Gold Collar at Hove towards the end of last year while Droopys Aladdin (Michael Burton, unattached) has won 14 of 24 races.
Armagh Daithi (Mark Wallis, unattached) was third in the Gold Cup final at Monmore last August, Not So Steady (Patrick Janssens, Towcester) has plenty of pace while Texas Jack (Richard Rees, Hove) has started his career with a blistering six wins and two seconds from only nine runs.
