Team-mate explains why Tammy Abraham can hit the ground running at Aston Villa
Tyrone Mings has backed Tammy Abraham to hit the ground running following his Villa return.
The striker trained with his team-mates for the first time on Wednesday morning after completing his £18.2million move from Besiktas.
Mings, together with captain John McGinn, is one of only two players remaining from Villa’s 2019 promotion-winning squad in which Abraham scored 26 goals while on loan from Chelsea.
And the defender has no doubts his new team-mate, back in the Premier League for the first time since 2022, will get quickly up to speed.
Abraham, ineligible for Thursday’s Europa League tie with RB Salzburg, could make his debut in Sunday’s match with Brentford.
Asked about the impact he expected from Abraham, Mings smiled: “Another 20 goals would be nice, wouldn’t it?
“Tammy is a fantastic player and a fantastic person. I think it is important for any team when players sign in January, they really need to hit the ground running.
“You don’t have the time to bed in or get up speed, in terms of fitness.
“But Tammy is a bright guy, as well as a great footballer.
“He knows a lot of people here and I have no doubt he will be a great addition to the squad.”
Villa are on course to complete the signing of another familiar face in the shape of Douglas Luiz, who will join on loan from Juventus.
Boss Unai Emery, who also last week recalled winger Leon Bailey from his loan at Roma, admitted the ability of players to adapt quickly to his methods had been a key factor in the club’s January transfer strategy.
“Leon Bailey, his adaptation was so quick,” said Emery. “Tammy Abraham knows a lot about the club and the training ground.
“His adaptation, tactically, we will need but I think he is going to get it quick.
“Douglas is the same, a player who was here before. How we are now with the possibility to keep the level we are in the top positions in the Premier League and Europa League, we are motivated and we need players.
“With players getting injured, we must keep going forward. The players are responding fantastic.”
