FA Vase: Gornal Athletic and Bilston Town march on to round five in Wembley push - round-up
Gornal Athletic and Bilston Town continue to fly the flag for the Black Country by extending their remarkable runs in the FA Vase as a Wembley showpiece draws ever nearer.
Both clubs booked their place in round five with victories on Saturday and are now three wins - including a two-legged semi-final - from reaching the final at the national stadium.
Gornal made light work of Midland League Division One rivals Heather St John's away from home in Leicestershire, where the visitors netted four unanswered goals against 10 men to the delight of well in excess of 150 travelling fans.
Bilston, also of Midland One, defied the odds against Gresley Rovers of the division above with a 1-0 victory at Queen Street in front of more than 500 fans.
Runs for the Peacocks and the Steelman are all the more eye-catching as both operate in Midland Division One at step six of the non-league pyramid - with the FA Vase open to sides from tier five at the level above.
The draw for the fifth round will take place at 3.15pm on Monday, January 19 on Talksport 2.
Gornal, who are third in Division One with games in hand, were clinical against 10 men in the second half at Heather after the hosts' Sam Grouse was dismissed for an alleged stamp five minutes after the interval.
Stuart How's men made the advantage count as Taylor Homer netted twice in seven minutes, the second a stunning flick, by the hour.
Traevey Wright and Mitch Botfield added late efforts to spark wild celebrations as Gornal extended a best run since 2013.
Boss How said: "It's an extremely proud day as manager. Credit to Heather, a very good side and the only team to beat us in the league this season.
"After the sending off we were totally dominant and 4-0 could've been seven. We smelt blood straight away. It's a great day for the football club."
Striker Jordan Crump was the Bilston hero with the only goal against higher-ranked Gresley 14 minutes from time.
A single goal decided the tight affair in which the visitors cracked the woodwork deep into stoppage time before wild celebrations among the delighted home faithful.
The Steelmen, fifth in their division, booked their place in round five for the first time since 1993.
Midland Premier action saw Lye Town climb above Brocton with a thrilling 5-3 win away at the Badgers.
Brocton led 2-0 and 3-1 with half hour left but the Flyers surged back with four goals including Oliver Shaw's double, Alfie Didlock's second and Nathaneal Dixon's effort.
Dudley Town won at lowly Highgate to go one point off the play-offs thanks to Matt Funge's penalty just before half-time.
Bottom-half Stone Old Alleynians lost 2-1 at second-placed Hanley.
In Division One, Cradley Town moved a point clear of the drop zone after a useful 2-2 draw at home to mid-table Smethwick Rangers.
Charlie Bache's late goal earned a point for the Hammers after Smethwick flew into an early two-goal lead.
Wednesfield are just a point further up after a 2-1 defeat at Lutterworth Athletic.
Stafford Town edged to within a point of third-placed rivals Eccleshall with a 2-1 win at their neighbours in North West Counties First Division South.
Dylan Baily and Matt Hearsey, from the spot, put visitors Stafford in command.
Improving Wolverhampton Casuals threw away a 3-0 and 4-3 lead to draw at Stockport Georgians. Jack Grimshaw and a Lee Chilton double had the visitors in command and despite Joe Cuff's effort for 4-3, Cassies were pegged back in stoppage time.
Hellenic Division One leaders Bewdley Town stayed top with a 2-0 win over Chipping Sodbury with Dan Sutton and Elliott Lees netting in either half.
