The Scotland international left the pitch after just 18 minutes with what boss Unai Emery later confirmed was a knee injury.

Villa now face an anxious wait to learn the extent heading into a week when they play away in Turkey and Newcastle in the space of 72 hours.

McGinn is the second player to have suffered a knee injury in successive weekends, with Emery still to learn the full prognosis on the issue sustained by Boubacar Kamara in an FA Cup win at Tottenham.

Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley are both close to returning and Emery, after a week in which he allowed Donyell Malen to leave for Roma, defended the depth of his squad.

“When some players are getting injured it is not good but it is football and we have to accept it,” he said.

“It is an opportunity for other players to play.

“Onana and Barkley, they are coming back in one week or two weeks.

“We have enough players to get the performance we need. Of course, we must replace some players if they are leaving.

“I don’t know what his (McGinn’s) injury is but it is his knee. I think this week we will know more about Kamara. But at the moment he is going to be out.”

Thierno Barry’s 59th minute winner condemned Villa to just their second Premier League defeat since August, 2024, ending an 11-match home winning streak in all competitions as Emery’s men missed the chance to go second in the table.

Villa next head to Fenerbahce for a Europa League tie on Thursday night, before visiting Newcastle next Sunday.
