Competitions take centre stage as Storm Goretti wipes out league programme - snooker round-up

The weather was the biggest winner in West Midlands snooker this week as Storm Goretti made travelling difficult for a lot of teams, resulting in several understandable postponements and the wipeout of all of the fixtures in the top division.

The seasonal break, however, saw several competition matches played which saw the highest breaks made in the 3x2 Challenge Handicap.

Sedgley WMC hosted Townsend Social Club with a deficit of 80 points to make up due to the relative handicaps.

The first two frames saw tight encounters but Sedgley emerged on top as Richard Davies won by 13 points and Andy Cambridge by seven points.

The middle frames proved decisive as Richard Davies made a superb 77 break to win by 65 points, Rhys Lampitt was also victorious for Sedgley, by 47 points, to put Sedgley 52 points ahead with the final two frames to play.

Convincing wins in those frames from Lampitt and Cambridge, with Cambridge making a 49 break, saw Sedgley win the match 472-287.

There was a tighter finish as Darlaston Cons B faced Poets A with a handicap advantage of 104 points.

Joe Melia won the opening frame by 11 points to increase Darlaston's advantage, but Raj Bashal won the next for Poets by 47 points.

Melia won his second frame for Darlaston, this time by 21 points, with Darren Millard winning by 11 points for Poets, which meant that Darlaston held an advantage of 78 points going into the final two frames.

Millard won again for Poets by 44 points but the match was decided by Bashal, who made an excellent 75 break to see Poets home 496-464.

Elsewhere in the 3x2 Challenge Handicap, Jamie Spence made a 49 break to help Baggeridge Social to victory over Essington WMC, 456-352.

Round three of the Individual Championship got under way and former champion Daniel Ward showed his undoubted class as he made breaks of 51, 45 and 40 to whitewash Gary Miller 4-0.

There was a closer match at Landywood Snooker Club as Dave Turner faced Callum Downing.

A 46 break from Turner made the match 1-1 after Downing had won the opening frame, but breaks of 44 and 51 in the next frame made it 2-1 to Downing.

A black ball frame made it 3-1, before Turner won another close frame to make it 3-2.

There was no stopping Downing, however, as he took the next to win 4-2.

Landywood Snooker Club also hosted the match between Jack Harris and Karl Ashmore, with Ashmore getting off to a strong start as he quickly moved 2-0 up before making a 41 break to lead 3-0.

Harris fought back with a 49 break in the next and also won frame five to reduce the arrears to 3-2. However, Ashmore won the next and the match 4-2.
