Woodhouse, from Bewdley, won the first set, but recovered from a shaky start when he was pegged back to 1-1 by Gilding.

The 37-year-old enjoyed a remarkable resurgence in the final three sets when he averaged over 102 to secure victory.

"It was a bit harsh on the first two sets. They were terrible, in fact," Woodhouse admitted.

"I gave myself a bit of a talking to, trying to play slow and match Andrew's pace. But after the second break, I thought, 'play your own game, what will be, will be'.

"Then I managed to up my game and get the win, so I'm really happy. Whenever you average over 100 on a big stage, especially at the Worlds, it's a massive confidence boost.

"I felt really good once I came back out and played in my own rhythm. It's definitely a confidence builder for the next game."

Woodhouse will face Krzysztof Ratajski, who progressed with a 4-3 victory over the Netherlands' Wesley Plaisier, in the last 16.

The winner of tie between Woodhouse and Ratajski are on course to face either reigning champion Luke Littler or 2018 winner Rob Cross in the quarter-final.
