Investigation launched after bottle thrown toward Aston Villa players and staff

Villa have lodged a complaint to Chelsea after a plastic bottle was thrown toward their dugout following Saturday’s 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

Substitutes and staff were showered with water from the bottle immediately after Stuart Attwell blew the full-time whistle as Villa equalled a 128-year-old club record with their 11th straight win.

Chelsea have launched an investigation and it is possible the FA could also become involved if the incident was included in referee Attwell’s report.

It was not clear, on Saturday night, whether the bottle had been thrown from the crowd or the Chelsea side of the dugout.

Villa boss Unai Emery and his players were in jubilant mood after two second half goals from substitute Ollie Watkins saw them come from behind to claim their fifth win in six Premier League away matches.

It is the third time in club history Villa have won 11 straight matches after also achieving the feat in 1897 and 1914 and they remain just three points off the top of the Premier League, ahead of Tuesday’s trip to leaders Arsenal.

But Emery is continuing to play down talk of a title challenge.

He said: “We still have 20 matches to play against the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United.

“Of course we will try to compete against them and this is our order, to compete against them and try to be more or less consistent in 38 matches like we are now.

“But even performing very well and consistently like we are now, we still have Manchester City and Arsenal in front of us.”
