Matt Maher: All hail the West Midlands history makers of 2025
In many respects, 2025 was the year of the sporting history makers in the West Midlands.

You know it’s been a decent 12 months when selecting the biggest achievement by a sportsperson from the region isn’t straightforward.
Many would no doubt pick Hannah Hampton, the Baggies fan and former Burntwood schoolgirl who played such an integral role in England retaining the European Championships.
For cricket fans, there is Davina Perrin, who plundered the fastest century ever by an English woman, confirming her status as one of the sport’s brightest young talents. Aged just 19, you sense it will not be her last record-breaking act.
The early weeks of July, meanwhile, were lit up by the brilliant performances of Wordsley cyclist Ben Healy in the Tour de France.
