Revealed: The numbers which show why Aston Villa's title credentials cannot be dismissed
Unai Emery might well be wise to keep dismissing or downplaying Villa’s title credentials.
Yet the Spaniard cannot complain about receiving the question, after overseeing a run of form which threatens to rewrite the record books.
Villa will equal the club’s best-ever run of 11 straight wins in all competitions if they beat Chelsea on Saturday.
Their current run of 10 consecutive victories is already the best as a top flight club since 1914, while the sequence of results over the past three months is of the like not seen since the Victorian era when Villa were the most dominant club in England.
Villa, who failed to win any of their first six matches this season, have gone on to win 16 of the next 18 with their current win percentage of 67 per cent across the campaign only bettered by the league and cup double winners of 1896-97.
Sunday’s win over Manchester United also saw Emery become the first manager since the legendary George Ramsay to record two separate runs of 10 straight home wins.
Villa have won seven straight league wins in the top flight for the first time since the 1989-90 season under Graham Taylor, a campaign which, somewhat eerily, also saw Villa make a dreadfully slow start, failing to win any of their first four league matches.
