West Brom make Alfie Gilchrist decision following red card in Albion's defeat at Hull
West Brom have launched an appeal against Alfie Gilchrist's red card during their defeat to Hull City.
The former Chelsea defender was sent off just minutes after he came on during the defeat at Hull - with many left bemused as to what he had been sent off for.
Videos of the incident on social media showed minimal contact between the Hull defender and Gilchrist - but he was given his marching orders.
The reason he was sent off was for 'serious foul play' however Albion have quickly moved to appeal the decision, citing 'wrongful dismissal'.
In a statement, Albion said: "West Bromwich Albion have appealed the red card shown to Alfie Gilchrist during the match against Hull City on Saturday.
The defender was sent off for serious foul play in the second half of the Baggies’ 1-0 defeat at the MKM Stadium.
The club have today submitted a claim of wrongful dismissal to the Football Association."
Ryan Mason had his say on the decision after the game, insisting Ruebyn Ricardo suffered a difficult afternoon.
He said: "I didn't really need to see a replay (of the red card), to be honest.
"When you're two yards away and the ref was seven or eight yards away, I think that view is enough.
"I think a player's reaction is always a good indicator, a good sign. I don't think their players reacted a great deal.
"He didn't touch him, so it was clever, really good from their player - part of the game. We can't give the opportunity for opposition to make the most of certain situations.
"I thought the ref had a tough afternoon, in my opinion. I thought there were a lot of mistakes. It was a difficult game and, in my opinion, there were a lot of mistakes from his side, but that's not why we've lost the game."
