Walsall analysis: A solid point leaves Saddlers sitting top at Christmas

Walsall will be sitting top of the tree at Christmas for the second year on the spin in League Two after holding Notts County to a goalless draw at Meadow Lane.

It was billed as the battle of the attacks with in-form Daniel Kanu leading the line for Walsall and County boasting the fearsome pairing of Matt Dennis and Alassana Jatta.

Kanu had extended his season tally to 11 goals in all competitions with his thunderbolt against Shrewsbury, while Dennis (10) and Jatta (eight) had scored 18 between them in League Two this term.

In the end, it proved to be the complete opposite of that, after the pre-match promise of entertainment failed to deliver.

Regardless, a 1-0 win for Swindon Town against Crawley Town at the County Ground meant that the Robins leapfrogged Notts County, but still trail the Saddlers on goal difference.

Kanu had previously scored in each of his last five but was unable to continue his hot streak in a clash of few chances.

One of the very few did fall to the Charlton Athletic loanee early in the first half but Kelle Roos plunged to his left to claw away his low drive.

It would be the only attempt mustered by Walsall across the 90 and it was somewhat gifted to them after Kanu pounced on a loose pass.

Walsall just never really managed to service the strikers with Kanu and Matt touching the ball just 12 times apiece - according to FotMob.
