Unai Emery reveals reason for 'coat throw' celebration after Aston Villa beat Manchester United
Unai Emery explained how a demand for Morgan Rogers to show more aggression led to the midfielder’s second half winner against Manchester United.
Rogers had already scored a sublime goal to put Villa in front just before half-time but Emery revealed he was not happy with the England international’s overall performance.
Villa, who had been pegged back immediately by Matheus Cunha’s equaliser, regained the lead when Rogers again curled into the corner of the net 13 minutes into the second half.
Emery threw his coat in the air in celebration and later explained: “I needed to show my adrenaline in this way.
“I did it because the first half I was not happy with how Morgan Rogers was performing.
“He scored a fantastic goal but we needed more and the second half he was doing it.
“He started the second half more aggressively and scored the second goal because he was aggressive in the second action, anticipating and scored the goal.
“My adrenaline (throwing the coat) was for his decision.”
Rogers has now scored three Premier League doubles in the last month and is Villa’s top scorer.
The 23-year-old endured a difficult start to the season as Emery’s men failed to win any of their first five league matches.
They have now gone on to win 11 of the next 12 and the boss explained: “We need numbers of the players and today and last week, Morgan Rogers has performed fantastic.
“But he started the season not getting numbers but playing well, always doing his task and showing us his commitment.
“Today he did the same and scored goals and was the protagonist. I am really happy because he is a fighter, he is a good guy, his commitment to the club is fantastic and so is his attitude every day.
“When he is getting numbers like today, of course we are proud of everyone but especially today with him.”
Emery acknowledged his team, who are back to within three points of leaders Arsenal, had not been at their best.
Cunha missed the chance to equalise again when he headed wide from close range, while Emi Martinez also saved from Benjamin Sesko.
Emery said: “The result was fantastic and the most important thing. How we competed was fantastic because Manchester United faced us with their qualities.
“We had an advantage in the table and the idea was to get some points. We struggled, it was a tough match.
“But through 90 minutes we showed our qualities through different players. Overall, we did a fantastic job.”
