Oisin McEntee scored a nine-minute brace to complete a crucial comeback for Walsall at Notts County in 2023.

That wretched run left them languishing in 19th-place and intensified the pressure on new head coach Mat Sadler.

It was a far cry from the lofty position at the League Two summit, that Walsall have propelled themselves into heading into their latest visit to Meadow Lane.

Back in 2023, Sadler had collected just five wins from his first 19 league games at the helm and his team had failed to net the net in four of their last five matches in all competitions.

Confidence was low and the mood was threatening to turn sour. Ben Boycott jetted over from the US to address the situation and stopped short of giving Sadler the dread vote of confidence.

Instead, the American had one simple demand: "Results must improve."

The barren run looked set to continue when Aden Baldwin headed Notts County into a 32nd-minute lead after some slack marking from the Saddlers defence.

Walsall had to stem the tide and escaped further punishment to head in at the half-time interval trailing by just the single goal.
