Maxfield picks the perfect moment for his second century of the season
Tom Maxfield knocked in his second century of the season as he delivered a stunning knockout blow in the deciding frame of his Staffs & West Midlands Snooker League Individual Championship clash with Robert Wharne.
Wharne took the opening frame at Stafford Institute on the black, but the match took on a seesaw direction as Maxfield led 2-1, before Wharne turned it around again to lead 3-2. The match then went to a decider, which went to Maxfield after an incredible 110 break.
The top two teams in Division One went head-to-head as second-placed Wednesfield Cons visited league leaders Hotshots. Wednesfield got off to a flying start as Andy Price and Joshua Walker put them 2-0 up. CallumDowning pulled one back for Hotshots before Oliver Spooner took the next frame and the match for Wednesfield. Jamie Brown won the final frame for Hotshots, but Wednesfield won the match 3-2 to reduce the gap on the league leaders to three points.
Landywood A remain third and Landywood C in the bottom three after their clash ended 4-1 to the A team, who stormed to victory thanks to Jack Harris, Robbie James, David Turner (53 break) and Bill Stanton, with Karl Payne winning the consolation frame for the C team to avert the whitewash.
Stafford Institute B remain bottom of Division One after losing 4-1 at Sedgley Ex-Service. Darren Pountney was the sole success story for Stafford, while Toby Smith made a 51 break as he won for Sedgley alongside Mark Jeffries, Gurdip Sidhu and Andrew Highfield.
Pennfields went down to a 4-1 defeat at home to Sedgley WMC. Paul Dunn won for Pennfields, but Stuart Pritchard and Rhys Lampitt made breaks of 45 and 41 respectively as they won alongside Shaun Edwards and Andy Cambridge for Sedgley.
Elsewhere in Division One, Charlemont Bowling Club earned a little breathing space over the bottom three after defeating Landywood B 3-2. Daniel Ward and Ricky Sadler made breaks of 46 and 45 respectively to put Charlemont 2-0 up. Gary Miller took the next as Landywood pulled a frame back, but Milan Krstanovic made a 32 break to win the match for Charlemont. Chris Jones won the final frame for Landywood B.
Bilston Sports & Social increased their lead at the top of Division Two to seven points after a 5-0 whitewash at relegation-threatened Poets Corner D. Karl Taylor, Graham Cole, Steven Giles, Michael Smith and Stewart Humphries were Bilston's winners, with Giles making a 48 break.
Bilston Bowling Club moved to within one point of Division Two's promotion places after a 4-1 victory at Landywood F. Wayne Bentley, Lee Edwards, Tom Hurst and Scott Fallon ensured Bilston's win, but the outstanding performance in all five divisions this week came from Nathan Wood, who made a stunning 92 break - the fourth highest across all divisions this season.
