Sunday’s derby at Villa felt like a step forward, even in defeat. Just maybe, you wondered, this season wouldn't be completely miserable? Perhaps, under Rob Edwards, they really were going to make a fight of it?

Then came Wednesday night and Nottingham Forest to sweep away the glimmer of hope. 

Surely not even the most naturally positive of supporters can now see a way through the mire. Most worryingly of all Edwards, a man who has been in charge for all of three matches, is already starting to sound a little fatigued.

“We don’t want to go out with a whimper,” the head coach said on Wednesday night. So much for that fresh start.
