Hotshots move clear after Downing's big break

Callum Downing's break of 85 helped send Hotshots one point clear at the top of Staffs & West Midlands Snooker League Division One.

Despite falling behind to Sedgley Ex Service after losing the first frame to Simon Hickman, Hotshots levelled through Downing before Karl Ashmore, Mark Ganderton and Paul Deaville sealed a 4-1 success.

Landywood are losing touch with the top two after being defeated 3-2 at Sedgley WMC in a nip and tuck affair.

The opening frames were shared as Jack Harris won for Landywood with Andy Cambridge replying for Sedgley. Stuart Pritchard put Sedgley 2-1 up, before an excellent frame took place with Richard Lampitt making a 44 break for Sedgley as he eased into a 54-0 lead, however Robbie James got back into the frame before clearing to the pink with a 52 break to force a decider.

Richard Davies continued his unbeaten streak, making it 10 from 10 this season in winning the match for Sedgley WMC.

Stafford Institute B remain winless at the foot of Division One after losing their bottom-of-the-table clash at Poets Corner, despite taking he lead through Stuart Jones. Lee Cross (42), Raj Bashal, Tony Walker and Pommy Kang took the next frames for Poets as they won the match 4-1.

Elsewhere in Division One, Roy Stokes made a 39 break to put Hotshots B 1-0 in front at Landywood B - but that was as good as it got as Chris Jones levelled the match, before breaks of 35 from Bal Sembi and 31 from Tom Burgess made it 3-1 to Landywood B, and Paul Lloyd put the icing on the cake.

There was an excellent 76 break made by Andy Cambridge in the 3x2 Challenge Handicap as Sedgley WMC pulled back a deficit of 192 points to win 514-388. Richard Davies also made a 40 break in the match.

There were a few matches in round two of the Individual Championship and the performance of the round came from Robert Wharne, who travelled to Shrewsbury to face Callum Wraight. Wharne made a 74 break to lead 1-0, Wraight replied with a 71 break to level the match, but there was no stopping Robert Wharne as breaks of 42, 75 and 54 secured an excellent 4-1 win.

There was a high quality match at Essington WMC as Jack Harris visited Stuart Hemming's club and took the first frame, aided by a 43 break. Hemming made a 40 break as he levelled the match, before breaks of 56 and 48 made it 3-1 to Harris, who also took the next to seal a 4-1 victory.

Dave Turner also enjoyed a 4-1 win, making a 63 break as he defeated Lee Holder, while Daniel Ward looked in fine form as he made breaks of 57, 53, 41 and 37 as he beat David Hall 4-0.

Paul Deaville made breaks of 66, 63 and 48 to defeat Ian Esprey 4-0, Tom Maxfield (52) showed why he is such a dangerous competitor after defeating Chris Ward 4-0, and Callum Downing also stormed to a 4-0 victory, making a 48 break in defeating Adam Stokes.
