Swann had been in charge at the Scholars Ground for five-and-a-half years - twice reaching the play-offs, including last season, but coming up just short on each occasion.

A statement read: "Chasetown FC can confirm that Mark Swann has stepped down as first-team manager with immediate effect.

"Mark’s decision is due to personal reasons and circumstances, and the club fully respects and supports his choice."

The Scholars briefly topped the Northern One West table last month, but have since slipped outside the play-off places after failing to win any of their last four league games, losing three.

Swann guided Chasetown to the 2021/22 play-off final, beating Halesowen Town in a thrilling semi-final, before losing 1-0 to Belper Town in front of a bumper crowd at the Scholars Ground.

And they were so close to a play-off final against Hednesford Town last season, but lost 4-3 on penalties to Congleton Town in the semi-finals, with Hednesford instead going on to win promotion.

The statement continued: "The board of Chasetown FC would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Mark for his outstanding contribution, commitment, and professionalism during his time with the Scholars.

"He has been exceptional for the club, both on and off the pitch, and will be greatly missed by everyone associated with Chasetown FC.

"We remain hopeful that, when the time is right, Mark will return to the club in some capacity. In the meantime, we are confident that he will continue to be a visible and valued presence around the Scholars Ground."
