Gerrard won an historic title with the SPL club during his first spell in Scotland - before departing to join Villa.

However, he suffered an ill-fated 40 game spell at Villa Park and was axed and replaced by Unai Emery.

Gerrard then made a move Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq before departing the club back in January this year.

The ex-Villa boss, who last week opened up about what went wrong during his time at the club, has become the frontrunner to return to Rangers and take over from Russell Martin.

The former Southampton chief was sacked last week after a disastrous 17 game spell in charge.

According to some reports, Gerrard's return to the SPL giants is 'all but sealed', with a deal agreed and his return could be announced this weekend.

However, other reports have stated that Rangers are also holding discussions with a number of other canaidates.

One of those candidates is former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl. The highly rated German coach departed the Championship club in the summer amid their financial struggles.
