Unai Emery still focused on improvement despite Aston Villa resurgence

Unai Emery has warned Villa still have big room for improvement despite their resurgent form.

Having failed to win any of their first six matches of the season, Emery’s men have reeled off four wins on the bounce heading into the international break.

But the demanding Spaniard is still a long way from satisfied, believing his team are still some way from the standard they need to be.

Deadline day signings Harvey Elliott, Jadon Sancho and Victor Lindelof are still yet to make a big impact, with the boss also mindful of the tough fixture list which awaits Villa upon the season’s resumption, when they play Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool on consecutive weekends.

Emery said: “There is still work to do. Still players to add for us, getting confidence, getting minutes.

“Now we are going to rest, some players are going with their national teams. We are going to recover some other players, who were not available.

“We got Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley back. There are still others who can hopefully recover for the next weeks or month.

“But keep going and keep improving. That is always the idea.”

Emery has granted those players not away on international duty a few days off to rest, white he and his staff review recent matches to see where improvements can be made.

Villa have beaten Fulham and Burnley in the Premier League and have also made a perfect start in the Europa League, with wins over Bologna and Feyenoord.

Emery said: “We are going to rest but work, analysing the matches we played. Then, we are going to start (again) at Tottenham.

“Then we play Manchester City and Liverpool - what a match!”
