But the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker promised his in-form team will do everything they can to spring a shock against Unai Emery's men in Rotterdam.

Feyenoord have enjoyed an excellent start to the season after winning six of their first seven league matches to sit top of Dutch top flight, the Eredivisie.

Their only defeats have come in Europe, where they were knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by Fenerbahce and then suffered a 1-0 defeat in their Europa League opener, when the head coach made seven changes to his starting XI.

Speaking ahead of Villa’s visit on Thursday, van Persie insisted European glory was just as important as domestic success this season, while outlining why his team are underdogs in Thursday’s game.

"Aston Villa is obviously a fantastic team with a fantastic manager,” he said.

"That's beyond doubt. They're super fit and play very structured. I think we are too. Based on that, it won't be a chaotic match. I think it could be a very good match at first glance.

“In my opinion, they're definitely the favorites. That's logical when you're talking about a top team in the Premier League.

“Many players are further along their journey to becoming top footballers or are already there.

“Aston Villa are the absolute favorites. They live in a different world in terms of budget and wages.

“But that's no reason we won't do everything we can to win. Being favorites doesn't count when those guys put their boots on. I think we also have some really good players and a good manager!"

Feyenoord have captain Sam Steijn back available following injury but another midfielder, Quentin Timber, will miss out with a knock. Defender Anel Ahmedhodzic returns following a suspension.
