Halesowen boss bemoans lack of cutting edge after FA Cup exit

“Gutted” boss Russ Penn bemoaned Halesowen Town’s failure to take their chances after they went out of the FA Cup to Aveley.

The Yeltz were edged out 1-0 in Monday night’s third qualifying round replay in Essex thanks to Ryan Charles’ 43rd minute goal.

Halesowen bossed possession just as they had in Saturday’s first meeting, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

But their inability to turn it into goals ultimately proved costly, with Aveley heading through to host Gateshead in the next round.

Penn said: “I’m absolutely gutted. I thought we dominated possession for both games.

“I like the way we are playing but if you don’t score over two games, you don’t deserve to go through.

“They will be delighted. We are obviously deflated.

“In the final third we haven’t done quite enough over both games, have we?

“I’m proud of the lads. They have really grafted. I would have been doubly proud had we got through.

“That was our 15th game in about seven weeks. I’m not going to make excuses but we looked flat on our feet at the end and we need a bit of a rest now before the weekend.

“The game is about results and we have to find that cutting edge.”
