Yet what now appears to have been his final act in international cricket, perhaps couldn’t better sum up the man.

The sight of Woakes emerging from the Oval pavilion, one arm in a sling, to try and help England over the line in the final Test of this summer’s series against India, will still be talked about decades from now.

That is Woakes, brave and selfless, the ultimate team player who while firmly in the frame for the Nicest Guy in Sport Award, is also built as tough as they come.

The dislocated shoulder which was the cause of all that drama, sustained in desperation to prevent a boundary on the first day of the match, now looks to have ended his Test career for good.
