Aston Villa's Emi Martinez poised for late fitness test ahead of Fulham clash
Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez is facing a late fitness test ahead of Sunday’s Premier League visit of Fulham.
The Argentina international missed Thursday’s Europa League victory over Bologna with muscle pain but boss Unai Emery is hopeful he will be able to return against the Cottagers.
Villa will still be without midfield trio Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley as they look to follow up their first win of the season.
John McGinn’s first half strike was enough to see off the Italians but Emery admitted some surprise at how few supporters were there to see the triumph, with the attendance of 35,578 the lowest for a home European fixture in his reign.
He said: “We are grateful always with the supporters when we are playing at home, of course, in Villa Park or away.
“But really, I was a little bit surprised when the stadium was not full (on Thursday).
“It is a surprise because we are very motivated and excited for the Europa League.
“We will need the supporters with the same motivation, and the same being excited like we are.
“Of course, I don't have doubt because they are going to support us in every match we are going to play.
“But yesterday a little bit, yes, I was surprised. Of course the supporters, they are always with us, loyal supporters always.
“Hopefully we can feel together the same motivation and the same energy we will need for the rest of the season.”
