Big change to Championship play-offs that could aid West Brom promotion ambitions given widespread club support

A proposed major change to the way the Championship play-offs operate has received widespread support from Championship clubs.

Last month it emerged that a plan by Preston chief executive Peter Risdale had been put forward to his counterparts over adding two extra teams into the Championship play-offs.

He wanted to add the extra places which then would bring in two extra 'eliminator' style games. The winners would then face two other sides, ahead of the play-off final.

It is an idea that has been put forward in the past but without any success.

But last week it was officially put to all the 24 Championship clubs - and according to Sky Sports there has been widespread support from the clubs across the division.

It is not known whether Albion are one of the many in support of the plan - which could not come into place immediately as league rules cannot be changed after the season has kicked off.

However, if clubs do back it, with the EFL bosses now putting forward a more detailed proposal, it could potentially be in place in the coming campaigns.

It does need to receive support from the FA and the Premier League but the early signs have been encouraging for EFL bosses.

It has been reported that clubs support the idea largely down to the recent promotion races and how parachute payments from the Premier League have skewed the league.

In recent seasons, the majority of sides who have gone up have benefitted from the payments, and clubs feel an extra two play-off spots would give other sides without payments a chance to win promotion.
