Villa have confirmed the departure of Monchi and the appointment of Roberto Olabe as their new president of football operations.

The latter is taking over the role with immediate effect as part of a major change in the club’s football department.

Monchi, who joined Villa from Sevilla in June 2023, is staying on as an advisor to Villa’s parent company, V Sports.

But it is fellow Spaniard, Olabe, who will take his place in the triangle of power at Bodymoor Heath alongside Unai Emery and director of football operations, Damian Vidagany.

Emery and Olabe have known each other since being team-mates at Real Sociedad 30 years ago.

Olabe even appointed Emery as head coach of Almeria in 2006 but has more recently established himself as one of the best talent spotters in Europe thanks to his work at Real Sociedad.

“We are delighted that Roberto is joining Aston Villa,” said club chairman and co-owner, Nassef Sawiris.

“He has built a reputation as someone who can spot talent that can be developed and we look forward to supporting him to achieve the ambitions we have for V Sports and Aston Villa.”

Sawiris thanked Monchi for his “invaluable contribution” during a spell which saw Villa qualify for the Champions League.

He said: “His commitment and vision has directly contributed to the club's recent successes, reaching the quarter-final of the Champions League as well as qualifying for Europe for three consecutive seasons.”

Monchi said: “I would like to thank everyone connected with Aston Villa for the support and warmth they have shown me since I joined the club, especially Unai and Damian who I have worked especially closely with over these last two years.

“I must also thank our owners, Nassef Sawiris, Wes Edens and Michael Angelakis for their confidence and their support.

“I would also like to say a special thank you to all the staff at Aston Villa as well as the players.

“Lastly, a big thank you to the supporters. We have enjoyed so many special moments together and I look forward to continuing to support V Sports in an advisory role.”
