Unai Emery confident more is to come from Aston Villa new boys

Unai Emery has warned it will take time for new boys Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho to hit top speed at Villa.

Elliott has made an impressive start since joining from Liverpool, scoring the club’s first and only goal of the season so far in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat at Brentford.

Sancho, who arrived on a season-long loan from Manchester United on deadline day, made his debut in that fixture but did not enjoy the same success, hitting the post when Villa were 1-0 up early in the second half.

Emery has stressed the 25-year-old is still building fitness after being frozen out at Old Trafford, while Elliott also needs time to adapt.

“There is still a lot of work to do, a lot of matches,” said the boss.

“Now in offensive positions we have different options. We need to get fit Sancho, we need to adapt to us Harvey Elliott.

“I think we have a lot of work to do in the next weeks, the way we improve and we need to get result.

“But after Saturday at Everton and on Tuesday, I think we are seeing some improvement. Not enough but I think a lot of things will be positive for the next weeks.”

Villa head to Sunderland on Sunday seeking their first win of the season. Midfielder Boubacar Kamara is pushing to start after making his return off the bench in Tuesday’s defeat.

Emery continued: “I want to keep going, to keep improving things, giving some players minutes we need to add in the squad. We keep going thinking now about Sunderland on Sunday.

“We have to improve and we have to keep the same progression we were doing and showing on Tuesday.”
